FDA Decision Plays

While the AVIR play didn't work out that well, I think that it may still be worthwhile looking into other plays based on the same concept, namely FDA decisions. Timing is obviously of particular importance with options and FDA decisions are some of the few catalysts with known timing.

TradingMarkets.com has an FDA Decision Alert today regarding the August 9 and 10 meeting of the Cardiovascular and Renal Drugs Advisory Committee which will discuss applications by United Therapeutics (UTHR) and Genentech (DNA). The FDA Advisory Meeting is also listed on Briefing.com's Med/Biotech Conf Event calendar but it lists BAX and UTHR with no mention of DNA.

Even though DNA has much better share volume than UTHR, both have very low option volume.

Still, the charts are interesting. DNA has been on a bounce from it's 1 yr low for almost two weeks now, riding the 20 EMA on the 45 minute chart. It seems to have hit hard resistance at the 20 EMA on the daily chart with relatively narrow daily ranges. iVolatility.com actually shows the implied volatility to be well below the historical volatility at the moment.

UTHR has been trading relatively flat for the past month. There was a huge gap down in December and a smaller but still significant gap down in April. Trading has been in an increasingly narrow range over this time. iVolatility.com shows that implied volatility has shot up in recent days to levels like those in April.
