RE:"OK, where's the Compaq or IBM design win AMD was going to get when their SMP solution finally came out? AMD backers (were you one?) were assuring themselves that one of them, or the other, was in the bag. It is a waste of money for AMD so far. And, where's the blade or the brick chip from AMD?"

I believe I already responded to this but surely it's a dissappointment that Compaq and IBM haven't offered an AMD solution. Particularly Compaq since IBM will s$rew ya real quick. OTOH, is this contracting server market. (Y2K boom, now bust) it's somewhat understandable that large OEMs are reluctant to add a new server line, w/support. Safer to stand pat until the storm passes...
Timing is everything. Had AMD had SMP chips going into Y2K upgrade cycle things might have been different. Now they will just have to enter slowly.
Companies often make mistakes but if AMD wants to get some of the serious gravy they need SMP. Otherwise they should just fold up shop.
Intel has been know to burn some cash too...Timna, Rambus, Chips and Technology, investments...etc.
