By DAVID D. KIRKPATRICK
Clinton Is Said to Be Close to Book Deal (August 6, 2001)
In what is believed to be the largest deal by far for a work of non-fiction, Bill Clinton has agreed to sell the worldwide rights to his memoir to the Knopf Publishing Group for an advance of more than $10 million. The previous record is believed to be the $8.5 advance paid for a book by John Paul II.
Knopf is part of Bertelsmann's Random House division.
