My experience on this is that often a widely held [by public] call option [say takeover rumor type stock] remains "fat" till it expires because some pro's are always willing to 'cover' them and move on to the next idea. This is not to say that they pay stupid prices... but if they come in substantially from the "stupid" price they sold them at, many with limited capital [most MM's and specialists] will just buy them back and be done with it.
