The thing that keeps people interested in gold is that it has a history of doing nothing for a long time and then exploding up in price. Sometimes a lot of overconfident shorts are a good sign of explosive potential..

I think the key here is the long bond. If interest rates start to go up because the Fed is out of money then the gold piper will be paid.
