The reason why no smart person predicts short term is because if you've had any statistics classes you know that IT IS POSSIBLE to predict long term trends with a high degree of probability. However, it is almost impossible to predict short term trends with any degree of reliability. That's because in the short term, all the stars may be aligned for a certain outcome and then some noise or statistical blip comes in and makes everything stand on its head. That's why only speculators and gamblers try to predict short term.
