The last leg is getting wobbly - housing is starting to fade. June 2001 - Completions (medium lag trailing indicator) up 9% June 2001 - Starts (short lag trailing indicator) up 3% June 2001 - Permits (leading indicator) up 1% This trend isn't our friend. census.gov With manufacturing, capital equipment, commercial construction and exports all down, it would be very bad if residential construction were to slow down. This is an area that can be helped by rate cuts unless consumer confidence becomes really negative (in which case nothing helps). We need a 1/2% rate cut at the next FED meeting or it could get very ugly from here, and quite quickly - how likely is it that a 1/2% cut will happen?
