PRC's reserves are even bigger than Taiwan!

PRC: 180.2 billion USD
Hong Kong: 114.1 billion USD
Taiwan 109.1 billion USD

Those are the three biggest foreign reserve figures for the emerging markets.

The takeover of East Germany cost a lot more than that IMO. And the German government had to raise the money.

Soros saw this as a destabilizing factor that would lead to the pound (and lira) falling out of the ERM which was the reasoning behind his famous "coup" in 1992.
