Why is that? You're right -- I just don't get it.

Because there are very few places on Earth relatively free of encroachment and this place was set aside to be one. The oil is not worth violating that principle nor risking upsetting the balance that exists there.

Same as above. The cattle and corn are intended for harvest and are not a delicate ecosystem that has taken millions of years to evolve.
