From an economic viewpoint, the oil in ANWR is useless to us now...it would cost more to develop and ship to market than it would ever be worth in the market, it wouldn't noticeably impact our imports, and psychologically it would maintain a sense in the eyes of the American public that if we just drill enough, we can be "independent" of the middle east for oil. Why even bother with a debate when we can't get the oil economically? We can be "independent" of the middle east for oil, which is the right thing for us to do, but that requires the broader implementation of energy savings technologies. The US focus must be on subsidy-neutral, lowest cost energy production (which is by any metric, conservation). The energy we can't make by conservation can be obtained via renewables and easily reachable sources within the continental 48 states. jbk
