What about Ancor-Sunmicrosystems collaborative work? Their network doesn't even need ATM, but it reaches much highter speeds using standards wich still connect to legacy systms.

What about combining ADSL technologies(for sending lon distance data) with intranet technologies(for the end of the loop)?
