Permit me, please, my two cents:

Society has become very complicated. Too complex for the common person to get what is really going on.

In a rural/agricultural society it was easier for the common man to have some kind of 'understanding' of life. .

The priest would tell him what to believe in and that was it. Some old fogies would pass on to them some learned-by-doing stuff and that was it

Cut for today. You have to invest in every human being at least 13 years of schooling to get him to be productive.

Now to interpret the world, to refine the data one get to be able him to make a choice, goes much more than that the school system passes to a person. He would need to work and interact in the world for another 15 years at least to get to know the issues and make the right decisions.

Of course, in a world where from 7 to 20 the guy is at school, form 20 to 35 he is learning by doing, there is a huge population ripe to be take on for a ride.

As a result all the 'ists' going for them. Any one can have an opinion and find a ear to listen to it.
