PALO ALTO, CA, Aug 07, 2001 (M2 PRESSWIRE via COMTEX) Gartner Dataquest officially released its independent numbers on U.S. information storage units ranking Sun Microsystems Inc. atop the UNIX storage market for the third year in a row, confirming that Sun is No. 1 in worldwide revenue of the consolidated UNIX storage market.

According to the report by industry research and advisory firm Gartner Dataquest, Sun's UNIXbased storage growth continued to outpace the the overall market and increased by over 27 percent in 2000, to over $3.2 billion. Gartner Dataquest's results also ranked Sun the number one storage provider in its hostattached external storage ranking.

"Sun is focused on delivering enterprise quality storage products and services that enable our customers to get maximum business gain for their investment. The Gartner Dataquest report underscores that our strategy and products are in line with our customers' requirements," said Kathleen Holmgren, Vice President, Network Storage Solutions. "Our flagship Sun StorEdge[tm] T3 array has had wide acceptance due to its unique ability to scale capacity, performance and availability to meet the needs of growing businesses. It has also received wide acceptance in large enterprises with nearly 50% of Fortune 100 companies using the T3 array today."

Roger Cox, chief analyst with Gartner Dataquest added, "The UNIX storage market is one of the fastest growing segments of the storage industry. Gartner Dataquest is forecasting the number of terabytes associated with the UNIX storage market will grow from 103,722 terabytes in 2000 to 1,890,400 terabytes in 2005, a 78.7% CAGR. Having an offering that meets the demands of the UNIX market will be a very important component for any major storage player in the industry."

Sun's T3 StorEdge arrays have received many accolades from independent industry resources. Most recently, Computer Technology Review Magazine chose Sun's Network Attached Storage products as the "Top Choice for Resellers" while IDC also reported that Sun ranked number one in UNIX storage supplier revenue for the third year in a row as well.
