The post election investigations only showed what the recount would have shown had it been allowed to go on.

The Palm Beach County overvotes and mistaken votes for Buchanan were irremediable, and no recount could have included them. But analysis of the ballots showed their overall effect was a lost of approx. 9,000 votes for Gore.

There's no doubt that the elections officials botched it big time. Since the election was tied, it really mattered. Preventing this from happening again also matters.
