The trade journal Information Display is a good source.

Like most trade journals, it is largely written by engineers and marketers from FPD companies, so reading between the lines is required. Still, it provides solid background information on the technologies that go into FPDs. More info at sid.org .

Which companies have the best growth potential? That is a very good question. I have chosen to invest not just my money, but most of my waking hours in one company. If I didn't think Candescent had excellent growth potential, I wouldn't be here. Candescent might offer individual investors good opportunities at the time of the IPO.

Other companies in Field Emission Displays (FEDs) might also do well. Motorola and Futaba offer little growth potential unless they choose to spin off a division to manufacture FEDs. Pixtech and FED Corp are smaller, so they could show considerable growth. They are each taking different technological approaches...which I am not in a position to judge.

Small LCDs could grow....Companies such as Kopin are making small LCDs with very high resolution. By using silicon substrates and processes, they can make very small features. We'll see if they make the jump from videocam viewfinders to true head-mounted displays (HMDs).

For the extreme in both growth possibilities and small displays, Microvision's "Virtual Retinal Display" has a lot of promise. Their people drop by the thread now and then, so you can ask them directly.

There are many more related companies that have the potential for tremendous growth. I couldn't begin to enumerate them all.
