You can configure otherwise identical 1400MHZ PCs at gateway with P4 and Athlon.
They are the same price - $1,299.

P4 mobo costs $50 more than Athlon mobo and P4 Ram costs $25 more.

So, if Gateway is paying $150 for Athlon 1400, they are paying $75 for P4 1400.

Even if your mobo and memory numbers are accurate, where does it say that the material costs to Gateway for the P4 machine and Athlon machines are the same?

You could argue that Gateway might choose for whatever reason to accept fewer profit $ per P4 box. Even better, you could argue that Gateway could sell more P4 units than Athlons, so they accept fewer profit $ per box.
