It isn't just kids who look to external sources. Look at how many intelligent people are slaves to fashion.

I think you're right when you say popular and youth-centered entertainment coarsens the product, but the question is, is it demand driven? Some of it may be, but I think its mostly a top-down thing. I don't recall the public clamoring for Natural Born Killers, but now that we've been exposed to it, we're ready for the next level.
