I caught a special on The Andy Griffith Show on the TVLand channel the other night. It was lovely.....
The essay is idiotic, as well as surly. Barney is not meant to be a send up of tough guys, the point is that he is a skinny, young, wet- behind- the- ears fella who gets himself in trouble with over- eagerness. Andy is a widower, sure, but by the end, after a long courtship, he marries Helen Crump. The jerk referred to as looking for a wife is sent up for going about it in a bizarre way, not for wanting a wife or courting. There are mean businessmen, and there are nice one's, like Floyd the Barber, as in real life. The mayor is shown to be a self- serving windbag, does that mean it is a libertarian show? All in all, it leaves me disgusted...... |
