LG Electronics' DVD-ROM Drive Set For August
LG Electronics' DVD-ROM Drive Set For August (06/18/97; 3:45 p.m. EDT)
By Doug Olenick, Computer Retail Week

NEW YORK -- LG Electronics' DVD-ROM drive, the DRD-810B, should be ready for retail by August, the company said. The drive is in final development, on schedule for an August release.

The internal drive has a 200-millisecond access time and a 1.35-megabit-per-second transfer rate. Read and transfer rates are slightly slower when the drive works with a standard CD-ROM disc, which reads at 100 milliseconds. To ensure the DRD-810B drive is compatible with as many PC systems as possible, LG is not shipping it with an MPEG decoder card or a sound card, said Bennett Norell, LG's marketing manager.

"Since there is no standard for MPEG cards, there would be a chance that any card we would bundle might not be compatible with a customer's computer," he said. LG is working on drivers for MPEG cards. Not including a card will keep the expected cost less than the $499 price tag otherDVD-ROM upgrade kits are likely to carry.
