The point being, if you are going to accept with open arms your child's rejection of societal norms and adoption of non-societally-approved behaviors, how do you distinguish between those you will celebrate and those you will not?


How indeed? That space between the snooty society matrons of the 50s (or the victorians, or the holier-than-thou demagogs) and evil is quite large. There was a time when people sniffed when one didn't wear white gloves and a hat. Now there's practically nowhere you can't go in denim, although some still sniff. Was there really any harm in wearing white shoes in the winter? I think not. It was just a bit outside the lines of the traditional rulebook. Sure, you'd rather your son be a doctor, but maybe he wants to be a bricklayer. Or maybe your daughter wants to be a brick layer. I would think that a parent would assess whether then youngster's interest was genuine and whether he or she was suited for that line of work; otherwise he or she is not likely to be happy in it. Beyond that, who cares? All that matters is that it make your child happy and doesn't do harm to anyone else. Better a happy brick layer than an unhappy doctor.

P.S. That kid who spent time in a Russian jail has, at the very least, a lifetime of anecdotes. I can find the silver lining in that.
