Samsung Starts Volume Production of 256Mb Rambus
DRAMs

August 9, 2001 (SEOUL) -- Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. reported on Aug. 7
that it has started volume production of 256Mb Rambus DRAM products.

That's six months ahead of other global rivals, including Toshiba Corp., Infineon
Technologies AG and Micron Technology Inc.

The chip measures 0.15 micron in width, the slimmest by industry standards.
The Korean player said Rambus DRAMs will account for 35 percent of the
DRAM sector's sales this year, emerging as a profit leader in the wake of
falling chip prices.

The price tag on 128M Rambus DRAMs is set at US$6-$7 per unit, while
SDRAM chips are priced in a range of US$1.60-$1.70 each. Rambus DRAMs
are used in high-function PCs, workstations, game machines, digital TVs and
set-top boxes, and are expected to meet growing demand.

Samsung also said it will release fourth-generation Rambus DRAM chips
measuring 0.13 micron at the end of this year.
