It seems to me a kind of phillistinism not to be able to appreciate the place of religious observance at least to that extent, and therefore roll with it.

I don't have much experience with weddings, but, sadly, I have a lot of experience with funerals, which are routinely conducted in places of worship. The venue doesn't bother me a bit, nor does the program. If I were to join a family dinner and the family said grace, I would bow my head respectfully for the duration of the prayer. And not be discomfited a bit, as long as they didn't ask me to lead the prayer, that is.

But if I were to attend a staff meeting and they started praying, I would feel most uncomfortable. I might even feel hostile. I surely would feel hostile. I would be so put off and distressed that I wouldn't be able to function. I would react the same way you would react if they suddenly started a voodoo ritual--I'd get "the creeps." I don't think I should be expected to roll with that.
