Main Entry: dis
Pronunciation: 'dis
Function: transitive verb
Inflected Form(s): dissed; dis·sing
Etymology: perhaps short for disrespect
Date: 1986
1 slang : to treat with disrespect or contempt : INSULT
2 slang : to find fault with : CRITICIZE

I like the word because it seems to fit a unique niche. I don't know of any suitable synonym.

Another expression I use a lot, half-assed, is vulgar, I know, but I have never been able to find a more socially acceptable way to express that idea, despite hours and hours with my nose in a thesaurus.
