"This agreement with InterTrust is an important step in our strategy of offering complete, market ready, platforms to our customers," said Sean Mitchell, Director of Multi-Media Division of Parthus. "Our MediaStream Platform™ is designed to allow digital music download from the Internet, through wired or wireless connections."

Does the Xbox need digital rights management (DRM) software?

"We are delighted to have been selected by NVIDIA for this important platform technology," said Brian Long, chief executive officer at Parthus.

"NVIDIA's first deployment of the MCP containing Parthus MediaStream is for Microsoft's Xbox. The MediaStream DSP is being deployed in NVIDIA's recently announced Media Communications Processor (MCP), a highly advanced multimedia processor delivering broadband connectivity, communications and breakthrough audio capabilities. The audio portion of the MCP includes a pair of high performance MediaStream DSPs executing up to 4 billion operations per second."

I believe the Parthus chips were chosen by NVIDIA for use in the Xbox because the DSPs execute up to 4 billion operations per second and not for DRM purposes.

The ITRU software may be bundled with the chips, but it may not be needed for Microsoft to provide the experience it intends for Xbox users.

Do you know why an Xbox would need DRM?
