I've received this answer from NTAP's stockholder relations on initial cost of storage. I have to confess that I have learned that initial cost means more than simply the price of the unit...

Check out the Input TCO study found here: netapp.com and look at page 20 to see what Input found out on the initial acquisition costs. Further, when EMC cuts initial acquisition costs it does nothing to address most of the real issues, namely configuration time, disk grooming and disk tuning, fibre channel network configuration and optimization, and people costs and downtime related to reconfiguration and expansion. EMC can't fix this by lowering acquisition cost.

EMC talked last week at their analyst day about automating some of the functions that are currently done by EMC personnel or system administrators at the customer site. This seems like a clear indicator that they are realizing their people-heavy model with the Symmetrix isn't going to work going forward. Info at:

We've been doing this type of thing since day one, and EMC won't be able to catch up to us. Moving to this type of model will be difficult for EMC and we believe it will cause further turmoil in their business model.
