Reading yet another story about a suicide bombing I am struck again by the phrasing normally used, that so-and-so group "claimed responsibility." That make it sound like this was a good thing. Why don't the news sources say that the group "admitted guilt"? Why do we refuse to make clear that terrorist acts are wrong no matter who does them for no matter what purpose? Language does matter. I have never understood why admissions of guilt are couched in language that makes them seem almost noble.

You can claim responsibility for saving somebody's life, or for discovering a new planet, or for writing a great novel. But for bombing people into death and serious injury?
