I suggest a useful exercise in thinking about the death penalty is to imagine yourself looking down the barrel of a riffle at a condemned prisoner. Could you pull the trigger?

If you say No and you’re against the death penalty or if you say Yes and you’re for it, you can move on. If you say No and are for it you are a moral coward. If you say yes and are against it, you are a psychopath. If you say I’m not sure, you have some soul searching to do.

Would I pull the trigger? I’m not sure.
