The difference between the death penalty and other punishment is that it is final. The taking of a human life should not be treated so lightly. BTW New yorks murder rates are below those of Texas and the death penalty is rarely used here. No one takes human life more lightly than the murderer. You can't compensate anyone for their time served unjustly either. Until the people decide it is immoral or unjust we will need to make the justice system work, not just abandon the principles because it has flaws. It's great news that murder rates have gone down in New York. What were the reasons for their previous high rates or for that matter the high rates in Texas? I'm always interested in scientific studies on this subject.
