Jim,

You post is predicated on the assumption that demand will continue to be weak. Right now the retailers are in a bind, they have the back to school demand question, coupled with the "waiting for XP" question. I would bet they are being conservative, and putting very few PC on the shelves.

In two to four weeks, the component manufacturers should start to get orders for the inventory build of pre-loaded XP PC's. By that time there should be a lot of empty shelves. The last month of the quarter should be very good for both AMD and Intel. With a $1 Billion+ ad budget, it will be the biggest ad blitz for PC's ever.

Who knows if the stuff will sell through. But you can bet that retailers are clearing inventory of PC's with Win 98, and will be filling shelves with PC's with XP. A slump... a big bump... and then ???.
