" We hired someone from IBM into Intel and he had trouble with the word foil - kept calling them "charts"." This ain't exactly hi tech, but I know something about the history of "foils" in IBM. They were already commonly used in Yorktown Research in the late 60's but E.Fishkill, about 30 miles north and a much larger site, used flip charts for presentations....every manager and high level engineer had a flip chart board in his office and flip chart carriers which looked like mortar tubes that were commonly seen on the commuter flights to Burlington and other IBM locations. With the transfer of FET (CMOS) from Research to E. Fishkill, foils began to appear in E. Fishkill presentations..... Once the EF types saw how convenient they were, charts soon disappeared.
