Mike, here is detailed info on the VNC and operating system.

---------------------------

The Corel VNC, or video network computer, will incorporate a Digital Equipment StrongARM chip, the SA110, and have 32MB of RAM on board, according to Oliver Bendzsa, marketing and communications manager for the new Corel unit.

The VNC will also have Ethernet support; a 33.6Kbps modem that is upgradable to 56Kbps, an SVGA on board, a video capture board, a parallel connector, a serial port, a sound card, a keyboard, a mouse,
and the OS9 operating system from Microware System and Motorola.

Last week, IBM announced that they will be using Microware's OS-9 on their NCs.

"OS-9 is well-suited for diskless systems like those in network computers," said Ken Kaplan, president of Microware. "Its proven reliability and unique ability to upgrade over a network illustrates the whole concept of network computing where software access and upgrades are loaded over the Internet or corporate network."

"Microware has worked with IBM for over two years collaborating on software architectures targeting personal communications assistants, Internet access devices such as network computers, and digital TV set-top boxes," said Mike Burgher, chief technology officer at Microware. "Microware has provided the baseline operating system, broadband and narrowband networking, and consumer graphics. Together, IBM and Microware have provided a foundation for Java-based development which leverages the strengths of OS-9 including a robust environment for development, security and scalability."

OS-9 is a full-featured, multi-tasking real-time operating system. Its architecture is scalable and modular, allowing it to fit a wide range of designs from small handheld devices to large networked systems. Microware's software has been successful in industrial and scientific applications and is now being targeted to emerging, high-volume consumer electronics markets. The company is developing software strategies for Internet and wireless communications by incorporating Java support, web browser technology, networking, graphics, power management, user interface and communications capabilities.
