We really need some simple, standardized way of legally establishing some basic things. I just went through the exercise of executing an advance directive and a medical power of attorney. I don't want to put any lawyers out of business, but it shouldn't be that hard. There ought to be some simple checklist for communicating our wishes about such things. The same is true for gay couples. There needs to be a simple document in which they can specify that they are a couple and what that means to them, particularly in terms of who speaks for them in medical situations. It shouldn't be so hard.
