The reason given was that DOJ and AG's didn't want to be seen as hurting the economy by damaging the ailing PC sector, which was depending on Windows XP for a recovery.

That sure sounds like a tactical leak. Nobody but Microsoft and a few of its most loyal partners is depending on XP is for a recovery of the PC sector. Much of the rest of the industry is worried more about how quickly Microsoft will kill them by prohibiting computer makers from bundling their products.

By the way, David, there are those here who think that discussing the news, legal issues, and technologies that threaten Microsoft's monopoly positions are irrelevant to this threat, which apparently is intended to be a discussion of MSFT TA, and speculation about which particular simplistic extrapolation might be some lower bound for the decline in MSFT's share price. But don't listen to them; your posts are welcome.
