Fred, You can't really compare holding company earnings from year to year because they are affected by internal transfer pricing. Only consolidated earnings tell the whole story. However, there could have been a lower earnings in the 2001 first half compared to 2000.
But as cash flow gets reinvested, the longer term contines to look good. Lukoil is also buying back some of its stock this fall (2.2%).
I don't know. I am beginning to think things are more stable in Russia than the U.S.!! Plus, if you live in Russia there is a flat tax rate of 13% !!! The U.S. looks to be where the next crisis will be.
