The Ericsson A1228c handset is not cdma2000 1x.
It never has been. It is availble at Alltel (Mid-Atlantic Region), Cellcom (Green Bay), US Cellular. It was Erricson's first cdmaOne handset brought out after they bought the infrastructure division from Qualcomm.

You mis-read the press release if you read it to say that the A1228c is a 1X hand set.. The first parargraph says that Verizon has agreed to sell the A1228c. The second paragraph starts with the key work Furthermore.

Furthermore, the two companies are conducting trials with Ericsson handsets using CDMA2000 1XRTT
(1X) technology with mobile data transmission speeds of up to 144 Kbps.

This is a seperate item of information inserted into the body of the press release. It does not say that A1228c is being used, only unspecified Ericsson handsets using CDMA2000 1X in trials. The A1228c has been around for a long time. It has not been magically transformed into a 1X handset.

The Ericsson version of the press release is a little less confusing.

They leave the 1X stuff to the final paragraph and phrase it thus.

Another interesting fact is that the companies are now conducting trials with Ericsson handsets
using CDMA2000 1X technology. This new technology has mobile data transmission speeds of
up to 144 kilobits per second.

Be carefull when reading press releases that you don't read into them what you want to hear but which has not been explicitly stated in the release.
