Jim, Re: "Barrett is a materials scientist (something like a Chemist). Last I heard this doesn't include economics."

Correct, but Barrett is not exactly speaking from his own research in the field. As CEO of one of the largest semiconductor manufacturers in the world, I'm sure he is equipped with enough staff, with the proper degrees in economics, to give him the data he needs to make an accurate speech. That's what I meant when I said he had the data at his disposal.

"At the very least he's shooting in the dark...which is about what most economists do anyway."

In one sense of the word, Barrett is in the dark, so I won't disagree with you here. Economics is *not* a perfect science, and even the most prestigious of analysts make mistakes on a regular basis. But you were saying that Barrett was "WAY outside his expertise", when in point of fact, he doesn't need the expertise to announce findings from others on his staff. As one of the public voices of Intel, he is entitled to speak on behalf of the experts.
