Do I take that to mean you recommend strangles in a negatively biased market?

No. In general, I recommend strangles if you already have some stock, want more, and are neutral to slightly bullish. If you are bearish, buy some puts. If you are very bullish, buy a few calls. If you are neutral to slightly bullish and want to establish a position, sell some puts. If you are neutral to slightly bullish and have enough stock, sell calls. I think that just about covers it. What's left? Well, the details.

That reminds me of an old joke. To a mathematician, God is in the details. To an engineer, the devil is in the details. Unfortunately, in the real world we are all engineers. Put another way, "In theory practice is a lot like theory, but in practice it's not."
