The largest private land grand in Canadian history was the Algoma Railroad land grants in Ontario. This entire private land-tax free package was bought by a large Georgia (US) forest products company two years ago. It encompasses some 60 townships of 36 square miles each of virgin forest lands. This land cost money of course, but requires no stumpage fee be paid the province. It is ironic that much saw log being exported back into the States from this province will be by a US company and it will bear no provincial stumpage fee or land tax whatsoever. I wonder what the US trade commission would have to say about that?

BTW, this land comprises some of the best diamond hunting land in North America. My company has some land in the region of the first good diamond discoveries in in-place rock in Ontario.

There is also excellent gold in this area and we have some prospective ground with proven grades. There is a profit making mine operating in this region, one of Canada's few recent startups to be still going and making money. Alas this aspect of exploration is a "hungry" one as gold needs much higher prices to attract investment to ordinary high grades in gold mining.
