OT Neanderthal man is a subspecies, not a different species. They were Homo sapiens neanderthalensis, we (or at least most posters on this thread!) are Homo sapiens sapiens, modern man. As our subspecies appeared, neanderthalensis declined and ultimately disappeared. The big question is why. Maybe they were wiped out, maybe they assimilated into modern man (sometimes I see a person with a pronounced brow and that makes me lean toward the assimilation theory). The two subspecies were together in W Europe for a very long time, those neanderthal maidens must have looked pretty good to a redblooded sapiens sapiens warrior. Interesting and I think pretty open question. John
