I remember running into a retired judge right after I read that (God, nearly 30 years ago).

He starts giving me the wonders of the dialectic approach, as practiced by the legal profession. I had the comeback! Said there were alternatives to the dialectic, and suggested he read Pirsig. Wonder if he ever did?

Years later, I ran into the perfect expression of the Sophist approach to the Law.

"The law is just. A rich man as well as a poor would got to jail for stealing a loaf of bread."
