I've never dealt with anything like that but considering that you were inside the case before this problem appeared you might have dislodged the cable to the floppy. You also might use some compressed air to clean the dust-bunnies out. I had a floppy start smoking a few months ago and a good blowing off took care of the problem. Here's a troubleshooting article from Microsoft.

If none of these things works and you get no more advice, floppy drives are cheap.
