was the last half of the 20th century in the US a bellweather or a blip?

Chris, hemlines go up and hemlines go down, but I think there are certain things, like a free lunch, that people, once they have them, don't give up easily. Trends may change on many things, but people don't easily give up free choice for rigidity. There may be subcultures that will retreat voluntarily into confining retro structures, but the overall culture won't unless there's some cataclysmic event, maybe a devastating war or depression.
