If you value tolerance, it is hard to not be a little prejudiced against the intolerant. One must be tolerant of them, for the sake of one's own views of tolerance, but the certain knowledge that there is no reciprocity, the knowledge that power, in the hands of the intolerant, is wielded to deny freedom to others, makes it impossible for me to "like" the intolerant. I do not see how you can really like that which is antithetical to what you are. And of course that is why so many religious folks are intolerant. If you don't believe in their God (whatever that God is) you are denying their basis for belief, and their basis for life. Tough stuff. I can certainly understand that.

I suppose if you can get beyond caring about the suffering intolerance and rigid adherence to belief causes, then you could "like" anyone. But it that really a good thing? Is it dignified to like everyone? Or does that simply make "liking" cheap? What does your regard mean, if it is given to everyone without regard to any metric?
