I read two books on genetics yesterday and came away with this new knowledge. Stem cells are not taken from anything even beginning to resemble a human being. At the stage the embryos are in at that point they are so un-developed they are hard to tell apart from embryos of many other lesser species. Mere infant tadpoles. The human brain cells and nervous system don't even exist yet, and that is what makes us human. The only thing human about the embryo at this point is DNA code. Therefore the fear about stem cell research taking lives is ridiculous. More human life is taken in an average woman's period. Seriously, the whole issue with this being some kind of "murder" is based purely on emotion not science. It's not even close to the abortion issue where foetuses are taken out of the womb sometimes after they've begun developing brains and nervous systems. These aren't foetuses they're just undeveloped embryos. Therefore Bush did the right thing, though he clearly didn't go far enough. But who needs government funding anyway, right?

The ethics debate will always continue but most people aren't educated and react simply on an emotional level. Also, the reason the church is so frightened of this whole area is that in tampering with human genes, genome etc. this is the next to last frontier regarding the mystery of human life which was traditionally God's domain. Also, we are also close to a point where (get this guys) men will not even be needed to reproduce babies. Ouch.

The other fact is that no government or church laws are going to stop this anyway. And yes, stem cells will cure diseases in amazing ways, at least for those who can afford the treatments. And Europeans are way ahead of us as they are in cleaner fuel technology and any other area where our government is myoptic.

Three mysteries scientists will never figure out though and those are - who or what created the first creation to begin with? Who created that creator? (etc. ad infinitum) And what is it that gives humans consciousness and souls? (at least some humans, though I wonder if Cheney for instance has a soul, gg). Actually maybe they will even discover the "soul" gene. Who knows? The mind boggles.
