RE: Avatar

Michael,

Avatar is but one of many contenders for the title. But, I think they actually have a decent shot to take share away from Iomega. But, let me premise that share statement by saying "How much?". Avatar could take maybe 10-20% leaving Iomega with a good chunk of the majority.

There have been many products discussed here that were superior to Zip when comparing just on speeds and feeds. But, that ain't the ballgame anymore.

As a long time Iomega long, I've constantly been battling bears and shorts on each new product that comes down the pike that "will surely kill zip" and/or jaz, but the bears keep sidestepping Iomega's incredible footwork they've done in less than 3 years. So let me flip this around and ask how Avatar will actually compete when facing these simple questions:

1. What is the retail penetration of the shark product?
2. What is the consumer awareness levels of the shark product?
3. How large is the installed base?
4. What is its penetration into education, government, corporate and So/Ho?
5. How can they fund a frontal assault against Zip?
6. Will it work with my home computer or the one I have in my office?
7. OEM agreements with Notebook makers?
8. BIOS support?

Some basic questions that will confront the shark product as it tries to dethrone zip. If you are only a notebook user and don't care about the ability to interact with publishing centers (ie Kinkos) or have the capability to pop your disk into a projector and play your sales presentation (ie InFocus) then great buy the shark product.
