Depressing, maybe. But also utterly realistic. I agree with you about Intel converting fab space to produce Pentium 4, but I also think that this is an excellent way to make the best of a bad situation. Given that it costs Intel the same amount of money to run, say, 10,000 Pentium III wafers as it costs to run 10,000 Pentium 4 wafers, and given that there is a shortfall in demand (such that it can all be satisfied with the fewer amounts of Pentium 4 processors that can be made from those 10,000 wafers), then Intel can actually make *more* money by concentrating on the processor with higher margins. Right now Pentium III occupies a price range of $100-$180, and Pentium 4 is planned to occupy a price range of $130-$550. Transitioning Pentium III to Pentium 4 must have been a no-brainer for them.
