I'm from the capital of the burning rain forest. The government in Brazil in the 60's and 70's wanted to develop the bloody jungle. It gave fiscal incentives to firms to settle there. So the firms used that as a loop hole not to pay taxes. But they had to show the government they were doing something 'economic' in the Amazonian jungle. So they just burned long stretches of it. It should be big otherwise they couldn't make aerial pictures to show the government they were "investing".

The fires were so huge that the those US satellites equipped with infra red cameras to detect sudden blast of energy as USSR missiles burn up the atmosphere were getting detecting the forest fires. The satellite started picking up the huge fires of the Amazon and the US pilots had to rush to the B-52's and open the Minuteman silos. They called NORAD. Nothing. No missiles raising against the US. They called the Soviets an they said they were just having a party and drinking some Vodka and were not in the mood to destroy the US that night.

Somehow it was discovered that there were those immense fires on the Amazon triggering the infra red sensors in their satellites and made a joke of the striking forces of the Russians and Americans. Reagan wanted to deal with it with the Stars Wars program but then the Cold War ended and no one hears abut the problems anymore.
