Veron is a very fine player... I will be curious, though, to see how he fits in with Man U, and specifically how his substantial ego rubs up against the equally substantial ego of Mr. Beckham. It is arguably possible for one midfield to contain too much talent. I'll be watching the same situation in Madrid, with Zidane and Figo. The talent continues to concentrate.

Interesting to see Liverpool emerging as a credible domestic challenger to Man U.

A Scudetto is an Italian Primera Liga Championship, something Mr. Batistuta has been pursuing for some time. He deserved it, certainly, and it will be interesting to see if an Italian team can put together a credible showing in the Champions League for a change.

I've traditionally preferred Brazil, but I really do think Argentina has a stronger side this time out. Brazil certainly has brilliant players, but they seem to have a hard time getting them all to pull in the same direction.

The Evil Frog, of course, is France. I guess you can guess how I feel about that....

I'm really more of a Champions League follower than a follower of the international competitions. I just think there's better football in the club matches. Better team play, and I love watching games where internationals from a dozen countries or more are on the field together. Fascinating contrasts in style. I know all of the arguments against the superteams that are sucking up so much of the money and talent, but there's no denying that when they take the field against each other, some stellar matches emerge. And they can be beaten: look what teams like Leeds and Valencia have done....

I'm getting anxious for the season to start.
