Oh Coug.
I hate to see you disillusioned so quickly.
Remember what I said about seeing the inner person?
On the internet most of us feel freer to show people the side of us normally only reserved for intimates. I doubt anyone sane would go to a large gathering and loudly begin discussing shooting people from other political parties- yet that is exactly what people are doing here.

They are either aware that they are protected by the anonymity of cyber space (which is a limited protection- and most people fail to realize that) or they are ignorant of how many people may actually read their posts. I have seen horribly bigoted racial remarks on SI, violent jokes aimed at homosexuals, and extreme misogyny- I think most of the people involved in the incidents I have witnessed would never have felt comfortable saying what they said in 3d (unless they had a social group of likeminded bigots).

So do try to realize that here, for some, the social breaks have come off. You may know people who think this way in 3d, or you at the very least pass them in the street, but you are unaware. And ignorance may be bliss when it comes to keeping harmony in society. You don't WANT to know what your neighbors are thinking. Or the politics of the garbage man. Or what your mail man thinks about race relations. If you knew it might disturb you as much as what you see on SI. There will always be people who believe everything antithetical to everything you believe. Thank goodness we live in a country which protects us from the beliefs of others. We can believe pretty much what we want, as can they. But it usually works out better (more peaceably) if we believe our beliefs privately when in public places.
