A Silver Lining In The Battle Against Foot Odor
August 10, 2001
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(Washington, D.C. - August 10, 2001) The marketer of Teva® footwear products, Deckers Outdoor Group, announced this week that its popular Teva® footwear line will soon be available with a silver-based antimicrobial compound that is effective in combating a broad range of bacteria, mold and mildew. This built-in protection against odor causing bacteria suppresses the offensive odors that are commonly associated with athletic sandals.

AgION Technologies, a Boston area-based biotechnology company, developed the antimicrobial and worked closely with Starsensier, an international textile manufacturer, to provide Deckers with the compound.

"We are always pleased to see silver-based products incorporated into everyday consumer items, such as footwear," said Paul Bateman, Executive Director of The Silver Institute. "Silver's versatile properties make it an attractive constituent in a wide-range of applications, whether serving as a catalyst in purifying the water we drink and recreate in, or acting as a partner for sanitation in households and hospitals," Bateman added.

AgION Technologies is engaged in antimicrobial and material research and development, and recently announced agreements with DuPont Powder Coatings, Honeywell Consumer Products, C.R. Bard and AK Steel. Its flagship product, AgION antimicrobial compound, is an advanced, inorganic material that is used in the manufacture of biomedical, industrial, and consumer products.

The Silver Institute is a Washington, DC-based nonprofit industry association. Established in 1971, the Institute serves as the industry's voice in increasing public understanding of the value and many uses of silver. For more information, visit the Institute's website at www.silverinstitute.org.
